Rolling with “Big Mo”, are you In?

Momentum_ManSo you have taken a look at the From Spectator to Participator post and you are ready to rock. Have considered the notion of New Year, New Possibilities. You have momentum now, and the once stagnate body is in motion. So you ask, how do I keep it moving? No fear, the perspective knows just how to keep the forward motion going.
I love sports and in sports there is a mythical force called “Big Mo”, “Mo” is short for momentum. Mo, can be very unforgiving and has commitment issues but can also be incredibly generous and exciting. Mo has been known to swing both ways from one team to the next effortlessly, and seemingly on a whim and in the same game or match. More times than not these swings are the result of extra effort or hustle plays by the team without Mo on their side in an effort to court Mo’s affection. They dig deep and put forth enormous effort to gain the momentum in the game.
In rare cases, the team that does have the momentum can keep the momentum, which often leads to victory. And in very rare occurrences the momentum can carry from one game to another. How can such a thing be possible you ask? They do what I suggest we do.

Minimize Distractions:

We must take the time to zero in on the moment and work like crazy to fan the momentum flames. In life there are key moments that can greatly alter the trajectory of your life. These moments are often referred to as defining moments. These defining movements can act as our hustle play, in this game of life. This outburst of effort to upset the status quo of our lives lends itself very well to capitalizing on these moments. We have to seize them by reaching far outside of ourselves in effort to court big Mo. In order to recognize these defining moments, we must focus on the task at hand while simultaneously being receptive to the possibility of success is indeed possible.

Play To Your Strengths:

In today's fast paced world of cell phones and twitter, microwaves and instant coffee, it may be hard to define let alone develop a strength. You cannot play to your strength until you know what it is. Take some time away from Facebook and YouTube and take time to identify your strengths. I’m suggesting doing a personal S.W.O.T. analysis. If you want to get and keep Mo you have to play to your strength. Like the quarterback in football or jump shooter in basketball, you design plays to allow that player to use his strength to help the team be in position to win. If you don’t know your strength then you can’t utilized it to its fun potential.

Let The Fear Motivate You, But Don’t Let It drive You:

Big Mo does not like fearful people or shrinking violets. If you want to roll with Big Mo you have to let the fear motivate you. What fear you may ask? The fear of failure, the fear of marginalized success, or the fear of inadequacy? These fears, if properly harnessed, will help keep you motivated to move forward in innovative and creative ways, never settling for good enough, tirelessly striving for best. Harnessed fear is risk, risk drives entrepreneurs and athletes to success and achievement. The risk of not making the shot or dropping the pass or missing the goal in the waning minutes. For those who are willing to lay it on the line to achieve their goal, the risk of missing is weighed in a split second vs. the reward of taking the last shot and making it or  catching the game winning touchdown.
Fear is a physiological response to negative stimuli. If unchecked, fear will drive you to flee or fight. When fighting out of fear you’re often out of control. That’s why we cannot let fear drive us. Fear driven decisions often lead to a path of destruction and missed opportunities. When fear dives we are not in control of where we go. You are just along for the ride. This is counterproductive and diminishes your chances of rolling with and keeping Big Mo.

Perspective Point:

When you have set your objectives (see New Year, New Possibilities) and are laser focused on that objective, you can perceive when you are participating in a  defining moment. This defining moment requires that your strengths be used in order to capture that moment and use it to its full potential. Because we have harnessed our fear and moved it into the realm of risk, we forge ahead to our goals. At the intersection of Perspective and Information, that’s how we roll Big Mo. You coming?
